Meet Interdisciplinary Artist,
Mär
Martinez

Mär Martinez is a nationally-exhibiting interdisciplinary artist specializing in sculptural painting. Her paintings dissect dominance, aggression and power dynamics through the lens of a culturally-enforced binary system. She is pursuing a BFA in Painting and Art History at the University of Central Florida.
“My work dissects themes of power dynamics, dominance and various forms of control within a culturally enforced binary system. Folie à Deux (French for “the madness of two”) depicts the animalistic drive for control and superiority. The female and male figures are engaged within an eternal, endless power struggle, where neither has gained the upper hand. The provocative connotations of the entwined pose references the way sexuality can be wielded as a tool by both men and women to assert dominance. There is no peace or equality within the animal world; humans have societal rules that govern our interactions, but the constant grappling for power remains under the facade. The tangled bodies reference an ouroboros as this psycho-sexual struggle for power will continue until the end of time.”
“The sculptural paintings mimic the reduction of figures to objects; they're removed from the protection of canvas, leaving figures exposed. The hand-cutting of the pieces is a crucial part of my process. The violent act of stripping figures from their context mimics how power can be given and can be taken away. The figures become vulnerable, naked objects in the outside world,” Mär describes.
Her art has been awarded by the FusionFest Best in Show Visual Art Award, Katherine K. & Jacob Holzer Art Scholarship, Winter Park Sidewalk Arts Festival Scholarship, Frank Lloyd Wright Scholar Recipient, CINTAS Scholar Award, Pinellas Art Education Association Scholarship, Hubbert and Webb Art Award, and the Miniature Fine Arts Society Award.
In 2019, her works have been exhibited at Chasing Shadows, Orlando, 29th Annual All-Florida Juried Arts Show, Stuart, Celebrating Hispanic Artists & Culture Juried Art Show, Kissimmee, Winter Garden Arts 6th Annual Top Choice Awards, Winter Garden, Zebra Coalition Orlando United Day Art Exhibition, Orlando, National Endowment for the Arts Station Eleven Art Exhibition, Orlando and Signal Flo, Gainesville.
